New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was criticized by Democrats and Geography teachers following an interview where she denied the existence of the State of California.

“A lot of these allegations of California really existing just aren’t panning out,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview with affiliate Flapping Tongues Newsmag last week. “I believe it’s a gold miner that cited it, but the data didn’t back it up,” she added.

The comments sparked backlash from California Democratic leaders and geography teachers who actually live in the state.

“I’m the Governor,” said Gavin Newsom. “I mean I know the people tried to recall me, but I’m still the governor of California — we exist. She should know this — she campaigned for me to keep my job.”

“I don’t know what data she is talking about,” said long time geography teacher Mrs. Wilcox. “If she would just look at a map she would clearly see that we actually do exist.”

“Respectfully, the congresswoman doesn’t know what’s she talking about. You don’t need data, just get on a plane and come out here,” said Harry Hardmouth, a high school teacher. “I believe we exist — I mean unless we are in the Matrix, which is entirely possible, then we live in California.

Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not respond to Spaghetti Thumbs request for comment on the matter.
